Liposuction

Some people lose weight easily, while others struggle with stubborn fat deposits. Genetics, lifestyle, and poor dietary habits can contribute to difficulties in achieving and maintaining a healthy weight.

Liposuction is a popular body sculpting procedure that targets stubborn fat. This procedure helps patients reach their specific body contouring goals faster and with greater precision.

Am I a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

You may be a candidate for liposuction if:

  • You have excess fat creating a disproportionate body shape
  • You have good skin elasticity
  • You do not smoke
  • You wish to remove fat from one of the following areas:
    • Hips and buttocks
    • Arms
    • Chin and neck
    • Abdomen and waist
    • Thighs
    • Calves and ankles
    • Back

It is essential to have realistic body goals when considering liposuction. While liposuction removes excess fat, it is not a treatment for obesity. Some patients may be recommended to lose some weight through diet and exercise before their liposuction treatment so that they are closer to their ideal body weight.

Liposuction is not a solution for cellulite or skin sagging. If you have these concerns, an additional surgical procedure may be recommended.

What Are the Steps for Liposuction?

Liposuction is a multi-step procedure:

Step 1: Anesthesia

Anesthesia will be administered to ensure comfort. There are many different forms of anesthesia, including local anesthesia, intravenous anesthesia with sedation, and general anesthesia. Dr. Nguyen will recommend the right anesthesia for you, depending on your specific needs.

Step 2: Incision

The liposuction procedure requires small, inconspicuous incisions.

After your anesthesia sets in, small incisions will be made on or near target areas.

Step 3: Suction

A thin tube, called a cannula, is then inserted into the incision to dislodge excess fat. The fat is then suctioned through the tube using vacuum technology.

What Is Recovery After Liposuction Like?

Due to the small size of liposuction incisions, there is very little if any visible scarring following the procedure.

You may experience moderate swelling and may have some drainage at the incision sites. Compression garments are used to control swelling, promote circulation, and help shape your new body contours.

When Will I See My Liposuction Results?

Results will be visible once swelling and bruising have subsided. Results from liposuction are relatively permanent, especially for patients who follow a healthy lifestyle and maintain a stable weight.

Results vary from patient to patient depending on a variety of factors, so be sure to work closely with your surgeon to help achieve your goals.
