Rhinoplasty

Patients with a large, crooked, or damaged nose may be unsatisfied with their current nasal structure. Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to address the overall shape of your nose by removing imperfections or enhancing the nose by manipulating it into a more desirable, proportional shape. Nose surgery can also correct a deviated septum, which can obstruct breathing.

Am I a Candidate?

Patients whose noses have finished growing and who are unhappy with their nose can benefit from rhinoplasty. As with any surgery, it is imperative that you remain positive and have realistic expectations for the outcome.

What Is the Process?

Rhinoplasty begins with anesthesia for a comfortable and safe procedure. One of two incision techniques can be utilized to access the underlying cartilage and bone.

Open Method

A small incision is made along the narrow strip of skin between the nostrils (columella). The open technique allows for more accurate and extensive reshaping. Scars are concealed by the natural contours of your nose and will fade with time.

Closed Method

Small incisions are made within the nostrils to make minor adjustments, such as removing a small hump or adjusting the tip of the nose. Scarring is hidden inside the nose.

How Long Is The Recovery?

Your nose is filled with packing and covered with a splint, which is usually removed within one week. You will be given post-operative care instructions that should be strictly followed. Discomfort can be controlled with prescription medication. Rest and take it easy for the first week of your recuperation. Most patients experience mild bruising and swelling during this time, which should subside within two weeks. After three weeks, you should be feeling back to normal and able to resume most activities.

What Are the Results?

Your nose will continue to heal and improve over the next year and should begin to appear better after the first two or three weeks. Any bumps, crooks, or other undesirable features are permanently gone. If you previously had a deviated septum, then it should be straightened out, improving your breathing and providing a more satisfying nasal shape. The nostrils may also be adjusted and resized to achieve your desired results. Results may vary from patient to patient.
