Breast Revision

Breast revision surgery is designed either to correct a cosmetic problem or to address possible health risks after a previous breast augmentation. This type of procedure involves the removal and/or replacement of breast implants to correct a specific complication. The most common problems include capsular contracture, rippling, or implant rupture.

Who Is a Candidate for a Breast Revision?

In general, the best candidates for breast surgery revision are people who:

  • Want to improve the appearance of their breasts
  • Are realistic about their expectations
  • Are experiencing complications caused by their breast implants

What Does a Breast Revision Entail?

General anesthesia is typically used, allowing you to be completely asleep during the procedure.

An incision may be made in one of the following locations: the crease below the breast, around the areola, under the armpit, or, in rare cases, through the navel. The implants are usually taken out through the same incision locations used to put them in.

The new implants can be placed either over or under the chest muscles. Placement will depend on the anatomy of your breasts, pain tolerance, and possible interference with mammograms. In addition, if you have some hardening or contracture in one location, your surgeon may choose to move the new implant to another site.

Breast Revision Recovery

Surgical dressings will be applied after your surgery. You may be required to wear a compression bra to help minimize swelling and maintain a pleasing, balanced shape.

Your stitches will be removed in seven to 10 days, but swelling will gradually subside over the next several weeks. Arm movements, especially raising or lifting, will be restricted for a few weeks.

Scars may be pink for several weeks and will begin to fade after several months. It is important to follow postoperative instructions carefully. Rest is important to the healing process, so get as much as possible following your procedure.

Because breast revision surgery can range from minor surgery performed on soft breasts to a major procedure on hardened breasts, Dr. Nguyen can provide more details regarding when you’ll be able to return to normal activities. Recovery varies from patient to patient and depends on the technique, type of implant, placement of your implants, and your usual level of activity.

Breast Revision Results

Most women are very satisfied with the results of their breast revision surgery and feel that it has a positive impact on their lives. The results of this surgery are designed to be long lasting. Whether or not you have had new implants placed, you should experience improved breast comfort and appearance. Breast revision cannot stop the natural aging process, but leading a healthy lifestyle will help prolong your results. Results may vary from patient to patient.
