Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation (augmentation mammaplasty) is designed to surgically enhance breast size using implants. It can be done to restore volume, help balance a difference in size, or be implemented as a reconstructive technique following breast surgery.

Sometimes, breast augmentation can be performed alongside a breast lift.

Who Is a Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

Women who feel that their breasts are too small for their frame may be good candidates for breast augmentation. Patients should be in good general health and have realistic expectations for their results. Women interested in breast augmentation typically identify with at least one of the following:

  • Dissatisfaction with body proportions
  • Dissatisfaction with volume loss after pregnancy or weight fluctuations
  • Breast asymmetry
  • A desire for clothing to fit better

What Does a Breast Augmentation Entail?

Breast augmentation can be performed using either saline or silicone-gel implants, depending on the preferences of the patient. Both types have an outer shell that is made of silicone, but the fillings differ.

Saline implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution at the time of surgery. Silicone implants are pre-filled with a silicone gel and typically provide a more natural breast appearance. There are many other choices to make regarding your implants’ texture, projection, placement, and size. These options will be discussed during your consultation.

This outpatient procedure can be done using general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation, depending on the patient’s preference and the surgeon’s recommendation. An incision will be made either around the edge of the areola or along the inframammary crease (where the breast meets the chest wall). Once the implants are inserted, the incisions will be closed with sutures.

What other procedures can I combine with my breast augmentation surgery?

For a more dramatic result, you can combine this procedure with a breast augmentation, tummy tuck, and/or other procedures for a full Mommy Makeover. This combination of procedures is common for mothers who would like to restore their pre-pregnancy bodies.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

You will experience some temporary soreness, swelling, and bruising after your surgery. Discomfort can be remedied with prescription medications. You will be required to wear a compression garment to minimize swelling and support your breasts as they heal. Most women can return to work in three to seven days, but more strenuous activities should be avoided for two to four weeks.

Breast Augmentation Results

The results of your breast augmentation will be immediately noticeable but will start to look more natural as the swelling dissipates and your implants settle. You will experience long-lasting enhancement and improved volume and projection. Results may vary from patient to patient.
