Blepharoplasty

Our eyes communicate our feelings and expressions while we interact with others. Over time, however, the eyelids begin to stretch, and muscles become lax, which can cause drooping eyelids and heavy skin flaps that may obstruct our vision. This also leads to a tired or angry appearance for many people. Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, removes loose skin and excess fat for a refreshed appearance and improved range of vision.

Am I a Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

If you are bothered by loose, sagging eyelid skin that is creating folds or disturbing the natural contours of your eyelids, or fat collections under your eyes causing a puffy look, then blepharoplasty may be right for you. Dr. Nguyen additionally specializes in Asian blepharoplasty, which involves the creation of the upper eyelid crease in patients where it is absent. During your consultation, Dr. Nguyen will evaluate your facial anatomy and discuss your aesthetic goals and the specific technique that will help you achieve your desired look.

What Is the Process?

Eyelid surgery can target cosmetic concerns the upper or lower eyelids, or both. Your procedure begins with anesthesia and can be done under local anesthesia in appropriate candidates. After removing any loose skin and excess fat, sutures are applied to close the incisions and pull the skin tighter.

Incisions may be made along the natural folds of the upper eyelids, to conceal scarring, or just below the lower lash line. If skin is not being removed, then transconjunctival incisions can be made within the lower eyelids. Ancillary techniques, such as fat grafting to restore volume and blend irregularities and laser skin resurfacing to tighten skin, can be combined with blepharoplasty to further enhance results.

Recovery

You will be provided with detailed post-operative care instructions to guide you on your journey to recovery. Lubricating ointments, pain medications, and cold compresses can help relieve any discomfort during your recuperation. Surgical gauze may be wrapped loosely around your incisions to reduce swelling and bruising. Patients should wear dark sunglasses and apply sun protection diligently while they are healing. It can take about two weeks to feel back to normal and ready to resume regular activities.

Results

Expected results from blepharoplasty include reduced bags or puffiness under the eyes, improved eyelid appearance, and less wrinkling around the eyes. Many patients can enjoy long-lasting improvement in their eye appearance as well as enhanced range of vision. Blepharoplasty does not stop the natural aging process so proper skincare and sun protection should be used to prolong your results. Results may vary from patient to patient.
